There is only one meta tag that most search engines use - the description tag. It is not commonly used for SEO ranking purposes, but it is normally used (including by Google) as the text on the search results listing.
The content of the description tag is used more often than not by Google when it displays the results pages for a keyword. It uses only the first 156 characters though so make sure if you are using it to check the length of the text. If you do not check the length your text will be truncated and it will look funny.
Microsoft Word has a great tool that will allow you to check the text length very quickly. This tool is visible on the status bar at the bottom of the page. To use it select the text you want to control the length and then double click on the word count statistics box.
All meta tags should be at the start of the page inside the head tags.
Google is a little scallywag when it comes to using or not using the meta description tag. When it does use it you can have full control of what is exposed to prospective visitors but it will often change what it uses at will with sometimes it just picking up a piece of text from your page.
To ensure you have more control over what Google chooses as the text in the search results as well as setting the description tag carefully also make sure that the first 156 characters of text on your page says what you would like to see in Google.
If you have a flash site or just use images with a little text, you have a problem! We have seen Google pick up the alt text from an image and display this when it did not choose to use our description tag. This will tell you to ALWAYS have some text on your page even if it is only 156 carefully selected characters (including spaces).

Rank No1 - Three Tips To Help You
by David Anttony
Sometimes it's just the tiniest of things that can make a Extended difference with SEO ranking results.
Here are three small things that will make a Super difference if you apply them all the time.
1. If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.
2. Title is everything.
3. Being bold makes you stand out.
If you are going fishing make sure there are fish and not too many fishing people.
If you were going fishing as a fishing pro, you would do 1 thing first before throwing your nets into the water ? you would KNOW that there were fish there to be caught! A pro fisher 'man' doesn't throw their nets into the water before scanning the water with radar to check to see if there are fish there. If you are smart at SEO you will do the same! You will also not go fishing where everyone else is fishing ? this is common sense.
When it comes to a more conventional world like SEO occasionally we forget every-day sense. So let?s remember!
In the SEO world making sure there are fish is making sure that there is traffic for a keyword we are selecting to rank for. Use tools like Google Traffic Estimator (just Google it) if you are short on funds, and if you have a little bit of money, go get yourself a WordTracker account (they also have a free tool as well which is great). These (and many other traffic tools) will tell you that there are ?fish? for the keywords that you want to rank for.
The next part of the tip is not to fish were everyone else is fishing! This makes logical sense but often forget that it's best to fish were there is little or no competition! So look for keywords that not may people have content written for but a lot of people are looking for.
Title is everything.
In the SEO universe the page title is the ?secret weapon? of the top ranker! Here is one thing to remember ? make sure that the page title is as close as possible to being 100% the keyword you want to rank for as possible. The page title is like the title of a book. If you wanted to learn about the sex life of a worm then a book title of ?Sex life of a worm? will grab your attention and you will know you have the book you want. On the other hand a title of ?Worms and interesting facts? will not grab you in the same way. The trick is to make your page titles 100% of the keyword you want to rank for. If you add 'clutter' words then you are diluting the most important SEO element - like diluting a single malt whiskey with water or ice.
Being bold makes you stand out.
This is a very good onsite optimisation point if you want to optimize a page/blog entry for a particular keyword ? make sure you embolden the keyword in the text 2 or 3 times. Do not try to over do it of course! More is not usally better in the SEO world.
